I used a 13ft shore caster as well as a 8ft rod in Hawaii. The only difference height makes is usually a little longer cast. In the surf, an 8 ft or less is probably ideal whereas from shore the bigger rod the better. You have to gauge your physcial ability to cast at distance, as well as your reel’s ability to let line out without a bird’s nest forming in the line. This plus the rod equals a good day spent in nature. good luck.

You can use it but it is harder to cast out were most of the fish are. I used to use a 6 ft rod but caught 1 striper last year. Most ppl think if you buy a bigger rod you can cast farther but sometimes you can’t. Sometimes it is to tall for your height and you will cast shorter than before. A better idea is use that and also buy an big game uglystik about in the 10ft range and you will be bringing in big fish and will have a great time so yes and no.

Of course. But of course it may not be effective for getting past the surf into deeper water hence the term surf rod. There is a difference between fishing in the surf and surf casting. You can fish in the surf with a cane if you want but to get beyond the surf where the bigger predators roam you need a long surf rod to cast that distance. I’d concentrate on dropping a line off a pier first Stevo.

you sure can. l use a 12′ surf rod on a sand spike soaking bait while l use a F/W trout spinning outfit with small grubs chasing perch and corbina. l usually wind up putting the long rod away and just stick with the light one.
you only need to reach into the breakers with whatever size rod you’re using.
