hi i live in the northern part of new york and trout fishing april-august. i have this really good pool that i catch like 10+ trout in 2 hours. ive only gone to this pool like 3 times and the first two i caught 11 trout in 3 hours and another time i went i caught 1 trout in 3 hours. i used the same bait and everything. i went at the same time. did the weather have to do anything with it? what is good trout fishing wether.

Cloudy is often a good bet, as I’ve often heard / read experts say Trout seriously don’t like bright sunshine.
In general, for any kind of fishing keep a close check on what the weather is doing in the days either side of when you plan to go fishing, as fish generally don’t like sharp changes / unsettled weather as it puts them off the feed & start sulking for a while until they get used to it.http://www.nws.noaa.gov/
Other particularly good weather to watch out for:
- The weather gradually starting to warm up after a REALLY cold spell.
- A good rain shower after it’s been seriously hot for several days (e.g. 85 – 100°F+ / 29 – 37°C)… if it gets that hot, and there’s no rain forecast, forget the pool (as the fish are likely to be sulking & lethargic due to lack of oxygen in the water) and find a River instead with a waterfall / rapids you can fish at the bottom of, as the fish are likely to be attracted to that area in those conditions ‘cos the running water creates more oxygen in the water for the fish.
Also watch what the fish are doing… if they’re not leaping about, they’re likely to be feeding on the bottom, so baits (e.g. Nightcrawlers, corn, berkley powerbait, etc) should work………… if they are leaping about, they’re likely to be feeding on bugs, and only interested in feeding on the bugs, so you might want to consider changing tactics to fly fishing.
Or for another change of tactics if one method ain’t working, stick on a Panther-Martin spinner, as I’ve found them seriously effective for trout.http://www.panthermartin.com/Lures/Spinn…
When I returned to fishing on my local river here in the UK back in 2002, between 2002 – 2005 I was generally lucky to catch 3 – 5 fish a year from there…. when a couple of my online friends from the USA sent me some of these spinners for Christmas, and i tried them on the local river I was almost effortlessly catching as many fish in a single 2 – 3hr session as I had been stuggling to catch in a whole year.
Well sometimes the trout aren’t always hungry or aggressive with food, but I am usually catching trout year-round. They are cold water fish so even if there is snow on the ground and the water is freezing, no problem. Honestly I have actually caught most of my trout around 2pm on a warm summer day. But I also go to another lake around sun set when the weather is clear, use orange power bait and I have caught huge rainbows. Also a tip for where you are fishing, try mixing it up. For example say you are using power bait try using things like corn, minnows, salmon eggs, cheese, crayfish, and worms. I have even caught trout off of chewed bubble gum and regular white marshmallows. Hope I helped you out.
I have always liked a bit of a breeze and clouds. Rain is a plus, in my opinion, as they seem less spooky and are out waiting for food to wash down to them. Early morning and evening are obviously the best times to go as trout will tend to hide under cover and banks when it’s bright and sunny. Like most fish trout seem to bite better during or just before low pressure systems. After a nice storm, when they have been out feeding in the middle of a stream, they will be full and less likely to bite. Good luck!
I am no trout expert, but the best i have fished was in late spring, or summer. I caught a rainbow with an earthworm, while i seen people beside me nailing them with pop eye jigs, and corn.
I would advise going in warmer weather in fall, or spring and summer.
Hope i helped ya out.
Trout are very Fickle Fish. A great place to find out is at http://mylunker.com . You can get a free profile and ask the members there…From what i can see, they catch a lot of trout all year long.
Water level is important, you dont want to go if there has been a big rain, or maybe your stream is regulated. Is it running of a lake? That will deff turn the trout off!
I didn’t know there Was bad weather fir trout fishin.
